Item 112
What is an NIE and does it give you the right to live in Spain?
Under article 205 of Real Decreto 1155/2024, the NIE (número de identidad de extranjero) is a personal, unique and sequential number that goes on all of a foreign national’s documents [1]. The Dirección General de la Policía assigns it de oficio, without an application, to anyone for whom a procedure for a stay document has been opened, and for visas that allow a stay of more than 90 days without a separate autorización de estancia or residencia (article 205.3) [1]. The number itself gives no status.
