Item 219

How do you get a school place in Catalonia outside the preinscripció period?

For a child aged 3-16, a school place in Catalonia outside the preinscripció period is requested through the Departament d'Educació online tràmit “Admissió a un centre educatiu fora del procés de preinscripció”, with or without digital identification [1]. You can apply at any time, but the tràmit closes during the general preinscripció (in the last cycle, 4-18 March). The procedure is free, and help is available from the Oficina Municipal d'Escolarització and the schools themselves [1]. The Consorci gives processing times for Barcelona on its page [2].

Item 220

What reason should you give in a school application outside preinscripció?

Item 221

Which documents do you attach to a school application in Catalonia?

Item 222

How many schools can you list in the application, and in what order?

The application lists up to four schools in order of preference, the school year and the municipality; places are given according to availability, so the first school on the list is not guaranteed [1].

Item 223

Where do you go for help with school: the OME or the Consorci d'Educació de Barcelona?

In-person help with a school application is given by the municipality’s Oficines Municipals d'Escolarització (OME) and by the schools themselves [1]. In the city of Barcelona, the Consorci d'Educació de Barcelona acts as the OME: its offices see people by prior appointment through edubcn.cat [2]. For other municipalities, check the OME address on your ajuntament’s website.

Item 224

When does preinscripció for Barcelona schools take place for next year?

The regular preinscripció for Barcelona schools takes place in spring; the Consorci d'Educació and the Departament d'Educació publish the dates of the next round (for 2027-2028), so check them in the year you apply. As a guide, in the last cycle (2026-2027), applications for infantil and primària ran from 4 to 18 March 2026, for ESO from 6 to 18 March, documents until 19 March, and matrícula from 22 to 30 June [1]. A late application loses all priority [1].

Item 226

Why keep your child’s school certificate for renewing your residence permit?

The Regulation requires children of compulsory school age to be in school for the whole time they stay in Spain: when renewing no lucrativa and family reunification permits, this is a renewal condition (articles 64.2.d and 71.3.d of RD 1155/2024) [1]. If enrolment for no lucrativa is not confirmed by the documents, the Oficina de Extranjería gives you a month to provide a certificate; otherwise the permit will not be renewed (article 64.4) [1].

Item 227

How do you get a residence permit for a child born in Spain to parents with residence permits?

A child born in Spain to foreign nationals with a residence permit gets a residencia temporal de menor nacido en España for five years, with no visa: the father or mother applies in person at the Oficina de Extranjería within six months of the birth or of obtaining their own residence (article 159 of RD 1155/2024) [1]. The decision comes within a month, and no reply means refusal; then the TIE within a month [1]. A Tribunal Supremo judgment of 08.07.2026 removed the word “solteras” and clarified the condition on the child’s absences [2].

Item 228

How do you register a newborn in the Barcelona padró?

A child is added to the Barcelona padró through the city’s standard procedure: online, by phone on 010 or at an OAC, where you book an appointment first [1][2]. For a foreign child under 14, you need the libro de familia or birth registration, or a parent’s passport showing the child’s details; the child’s TIE or passport is added if they have one [2]. A parent applies for themselves and for their children together if they came from the same municipality [2].

Frequently asked questions

How do you enrol a child in a school in Barcelona if the school year has already started?
Through the Departament d'Educació online application “Admissió a un centre educatiu fora del procés de preinscripció”: it is for children who have not studied in Catalonia or have moved to another municipality, or, within Barcelona, to another district. You list up to four schools in order of preference and attach the birth certificate or libro de família and the child’s passport. The Consorci d'Educació de Barcelona helps by appointment. The procedure is free.
Do you need a school certificate to renew a residence permit?
Yes, if you have children of compulsory school age with you. For no lucrativa renewal and for family reunification, the regulation requires the children to be enrolled in school (articles 64.2.d and 71.3.d RD 1155/2024); if this is not documented for no lucrativa, the Oficina de Extranjería gives you a month to provide the certificate, otherwise the permit is not renewed (article 64.4). For other grounds, check the conditions in the regulation.
Do you have to learn Catalan for a residence permit?
There is no language exam for a residence permit. Knowledge of Catalan or Spanish counts in the informe d'integració, which the Generalitat issues for arraigo social and socioformativo, and on renewal when a condition is not met: level A2 or a course of 90 hours or more is enough. Citizenship requires the DELE A2 and CCSE exams in Spanish. Catalan A1 and A2 courses at the CPNL are free.
What should you do if a child is born in Barcelona to parents with residence permits?
After registering the birth at the Registre Civil, a parent applies in person to the Oficina de Extranjería for the child’s permit under article 159 RD 1155/2024 within six months of the birth. The permit is issued for five years without a visa; the decision comes within a month, and silence means refusal. Then, within a month, you apply for the child’s TIE. Any application for a child is a reason to check the documents with a lawyer.
Do you need your degree recognised (homologación) to work in Spain?
Only for regulated professions: doctors, nurses, architects, engineers, teachers and others on the RD 889/2022 list (lawyers and procuradores are not on it). For other professions and for further study, you request a declaración de equivalencia. Both procedures are filed only electronically through the Ministry of Science sede, with fee tasa 107 (€166.50); the decision takes up to six months, and if there is no answer the application can be treated as rejected.
