Barcelona neighbourhoods for families: what to look at

There is no official ranking of Barcelona neighbourhoods for families. The city is divided into 10 districtes, and the reference points you can check are the school zone for the address, the nearest CAP, transport and Ajuntament data.

Information material, not an individual legal opinion. Conditions apply to each specific situation and may change.
In brief
  • Barcelona is divided into 10 districtes (districts), which contain barris (neighbourhoods). Access to basic services, such as schools and the CAP (primary care centre), is based on proximity to your home [1].
  • The school zone depends on your address. For nursery it is the districte; for infantil and primaria (ages 3-12) it is one of 29 zones made up of barris within one districte; for ESO (12-16) it is the districte; the decision rests with the Consorci d'Educació de Barcelona [2].
  • Transport: the single-zone fare applies across the 36 AMB municipalities; check the journey time from the specific address to school and work rather than going by the name of the area [3].
  • We have no rankings of areas or prices: we found no official data comparing areas as “better” or “worse”, and we do not publish assessments from private sources [1][4].
  • Data on districtes and barris is published by the Ajuntament on the Portal Barcelona Dades (population, structure, indicators) [4].

How many districts does Barcelona have and how are they organised?

Barcelona is made up of ten districtes: Ciutat Vella, Eixample, Sants-Montjuïc, Les Corts, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Gràcia, Horta-Guinardó, Nou Barris, Sant Andreu and Sant Martí [1]. Each is divided into barris, or neighbourhoods. In its welcome guide for newcomers, the Ajuntament (city council) explains that access to basic services, including schools and the CAP (Centre d'Atenció Primària, the primary care centre), is based on proximity: you go to the service nearest your address [1].

This means that the choice of area affects your school zone, which primary care centre you are assigned to and your commute, not the “quality” of those services. Official sources contain no such comparisons.

Is there an official ranking of Barcelona neighbourhoods for families?

No. We found no summary from the Ajuntament, the Generalitat or the Consorci d'Educació that ranks districtes by how “family-friendly” they are. The Ajuntament publishes data on districtes and barris on the Portal Barcelona Dades (population, age, housing and other indicators) without any ranking [4]. Rankings and “top areas” lists in private blogs, on portals and from agencies are based on different criteria and may contradict each other; we do not use them and do not recommend specific agencies or portals.

For a family, three checks on a specific address are more useful: the school zone, the distance to the CAP and the journey time to work and school.

How does school zoning affect your choice of neighbourhood?

Proximity of the home to the school is one of the priority criteria in pre-enrolment. The Consorci d'Educació de Barcelona publishes a list of “proximitat” schools for each address: these are the schools where, if you put them first, you can get the maximum score for proximity [2]. The rules differ by age:

StageZone by addressSource
Nursery, ages 0-3Districte; some centres have their own zoneedubcn.cat [2]
Infantil and primaria, ages 3-12One of 29 zones: a barri or group of barris within one districte; based on the zones approved on 23.01.2012edubcn.cat [2]
ESO, ages 12-16Districte plus schools linked by adscripciónedubcn.cat [2]
Bachillerato (daytime)The same districte gives the maximum 30 pointsedubcn.cat [2]

The list of schools for ages 3-12 includes the three nearest state schools and the three nearest concertados, all schools in the zone, schools no more than 500 metres away and, where needed, others, up to six of each type [2]. Distance is measured from the block of houses (illa de cases) [2]. You can get the list for your address on the Consorci website. We do not assess or recommend schools. Which transport indicators can you check?

The metro, FGC, Rodalies, tram and buses run on a single integrated ATM system. The single-zone fare applies across the 36 municipalities of the Barcelona metropolitan area (AMB), 18 in the first ring and 18 in the second [3]. What to check for a specific address:

  • the nearest metro, FGC or Rodalies station and the route to work and school;
  • the journey time at rush hour, not just on the map;
  • the nearest bus stops and the NitBus night service;
  • how to get to the airport.

On travel passes for adults and children: T-usual and other tickets. Any figures for time and distance are best taken from the ATM or TMB journey planner for your address: we do not have them.

Rental and purchase prices by area depend on the date, the building and the terms, so they are not given here. On finding a home: how to find a flat in Barcelona. What suits your family depends on your children’s ages, work, budget and habits. The decision is yours. If you are moving with your family, the steps and deadlines are collected in the family route card, the service is described on the family reunification and residence permits for families page, and an overview of residence grounds is on the residence permit in Barcelona page.

Frequently asked questions

Which areas of Barcelona are best for a family with children?
There is no official ranking: neither the Ajuntament nor the Consorci d'Educació compares districtes by how suitable they are for families. For a specific address, check the school zone, the nearest CAP, transport and the Barcelona Dades data. We do not use the opinions of agencies and portals. [1][2][4]
How many districts does Barcelona have?
Ten official districtes: Ciutat Vella, Eixample, Sants-Montjuïc, Les Corts, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi, Gràcia, Horta-Guinardó, Nou Barris, Sant Andreu and Sant Martí. Each is divided into barris. Access to schools and the CAP is based on proximity to your address. [1]
How does your address affect enrolling a child in school in Barcelona?
Proximity of the home is one of the priority criteria. For ages 3-12 Barcelona is divided into 29 zones; for ESO the zone is the districte, and for nursery it is also the districte. The Consorci d'Educació publishes a list of proximitat schools for each address. [2]
Can I choose a school in another area?
Proximity to your home earns points in the ranking of applications: the maximum score is available at the schools on the proximitat list for your address if you put them first. For ESO, applications to adscrita schools go through regardless of points, as long as you do not add other schools to the list. Check the conditions for schools outside the list with the Consorci. [2]
Is there a single travel pass for all areas of Barcelona?
Yes, the single-zone fare applies across the 36 AMB municipalities, including all of Barcelona’s districtes. Which pass to choose depends on age and how often you travel; details are in the article on the T-usual and on the ATM website. [3]
Where can I find official statistics on Barcelona’s districts?
On the Portal Barcelona Dades (portaldades.ajuntament.barcelona.cat) and on the Ajuntament’s statistics page (ajuntament.barcelona.cat/estadistica): data by districtes and barris. There are no rankings of areas there; these are population and city indicators. [4]
