Renewing a student visa in Spain: deadlines and documents

Renewing a student visa in Spain, that is, the prórroga of a student estancia, is done electronically within two months before expiry or three months after. An application filed in time extends the previous permit until a decision; the extension is granted for the course but for no more than a year, and no more than twice in higher and secondary education.

Information material, not an individual legal opinion. Conditions apply to each specific situation and may change.
In brief
  • Filing window: two months before expiry and three months after. An application on time extends the previous permit until the decision; if you file after expiry, a penalty procedure is possible (article 55 of Real Decreto 1155/2024) [1].
  • You file electronically with the oficina de extranjería of the province where you obtained your first estancia. If there is no decision within a month, the application is deemed refused by silencio administrativo [1][2].
  • What you prove: continuation of studies and payment of enrolment, funds (100% IPREM for yourself, 75% and 50% for family members), insurance, a valid passport and no threat to public order, plus the fee [1][2].
  • Limits: up to two renewals for higher education and post-compulsory secondary education, one for volunteering and training activities. Each renewal is for no more than a year [1].
  • Not everyone needs a renewal. An estancia for higher education is issued for the full official length of the programme, and once a year you only confirm enrolment on the new course [1].
  • While the application is being processed, you can only travel with an autorización de regreso: it is valid for up to 90 days [4].

Extending a student visa in Spain: when to apply

Strictly speaking, what is renewed is not the visa but the stay permit (estancia): the visa only serves for entry. Renewal under article 55.3 of the regulation is available within the two months before the permit expires for higher education, post-compulsory secondary education, volunteering and training activities. This article provides no renewal for school pupil exchanges [1].

When you fileWhat happens
From two months before expiry up to the expiry dateAn application on time extends the previous permit until the decision
Within three months after expiryThe previous permit is also extended until the decision, but a penalty procedure under article 52.b of Ley Orgánica 4/2000 is possible
Later than three monthsArticle 55 provides no renewal: you need to look for another ground
One month with no answerDeemed a refusal (silencio administrativo)

The calculation is based on the permit’s expiry date, not on the academic year. The permit expires 15 days after the programme ends [1]. So take the date from your TIE or the decision, not from the school timetable. The general logic of the windows is described in deadlines for residence permit renewal.

Whether you need an extension: annual authorisation and authorisation for the full term

This is a fork that is rarely written about. For higher education, the estancia is issued for the full official length of the programme (article 55.1). If the permit was issued for more than a year, no renewal is needed: you or the university only provide proof of enrolment (matrícula) each year at the start of the course, otherwise the permit’s validity is in question [1]. You have to renew if the programme lasts longer than stated in the permit, if you were given a one-year permit, or if you are studying under another category where the permit is issued for a year at most.

For courses outside higher education the permit is issued for no more than a year, so renewals are more frequent. The administration may at any time require proof that you still meet the conditions [1].

What to prove: documents and funds

The list in article 55.3 includes the conditions of the category (article 53.1), no threat to public order (53.2) and the three general requirements of article 35: passport, funds, insurance [1]. The ministry specifies the documents in Hoja 1 [2]:

WhatHow to prove it
PassportValid, under Hoja 1 with at least a year of validity left
Continuation of studiesAdmission and payment of enrolment for the new period (matrícula); for language courses, the result of the previous course
Funds100% IPREM per month for the student and 75% and 50% for family members; can be proven by any means, including family support and grants
InsuranceHealth insurance for the new period; if you work, alta in the Seguridad Social replaces it [1]
FeePayment receipt

The IPREM for 2026 is €600 a month, so 100% is €600, 75% is €450 and 50% is €300 [5]. A criminal record certificate and a medical certificate are not named in the list in article 55.3: the authority checks criminal records itself in Spanish databases [1]. If you took an exam on a language course or registered for the DELE, attach proof of the result.

How many times and for how long it can be extended

CategoryNumber of renewalsPeriod
Higher educationUp to two per permitLength of the course, no more than a year
Post-compulsory secondaryUp to twoLength of the course, no more than a year
VolunteeringOneNo more than a year
Training activities (languages, etc.)OneLength of the activity, no more than a year

A language course has an extra condition: you need a passed course at an escuela oficial de idiomas, or a DELE diploma, an exam registration or a SIELE diploma (article 55.5) [1]. For preparation for medical specialisation exams, you need to prove that you sat the selection exam. Language-specific details: language courses and the study permit.

How to apply: what to do and in what order

  1. Work out the window from the permit’s expiry date and set yourself a reminder: two months before the date.
  2. Put the package together and check that the school’s documents are issued before you file, not “after the exam”.
  3. File electronically: yourself or through a representative, on the official form, with the oficina de extranjería of the province where the first permit was obtained [1]. Electronic filing is written into article 55.4 itself. The Tribunal Supremo rulings of 8 and 29 July 2026 declared void paragraph 2 of article 197, with its general list of procedures in which estancia renewal was also listed as mandatorily electronic, but article 55.4 is not named in the operative parts [1][6][7]. So plan on filing electronically and check the procedure with the oficina before filing. On electronic filing and representatives: what the sede electrónica is and certificado digital and representatives.
  4. Pay the fee. The code and amount are given on the authority’s page.
  5. Keep proof of filing and watch for notifications. If you receive a request to complete your documents, reply on time: requerimiento: how to respond.
  6. After a favourable decision, apply for a new TIE within a month: TIE and huellas in Barcelona [2].

Travel while the application is pending

Filing on time keeps you in Spain lawfully, but you cannot freely leave and come back. For this there is the autorización de regreso: it is issued if you applied for renewal within the legal deadline, and it is valid for no more than 90 days [4]. You request it at the oficina de extranjería or the police, form EX-13, fee via modelo 790, código 012 [4]. If you need to travel urgently, the procedure can be handled as a priority when the trip is necessary. Details: autorización de regreso.

If you change programme or school, or have already finished the course

Article 55 does not expressly describe a change of school or programme. It contains two important rules: you must continue to meet the conditions on which you obtained the permit, and the school must keep its recognition. If the school loses its recognition, article 55.6 allows you to finish your studies at another recognised higher education institution [1]. If you have finished the programme and want to stay, renewal is not meant for that: see after studies: work and change of status. The window for switching under article 190 opens two months before the estancia ends and remains open for three months after [1].

Common mistakes

  • Taking the expiry date from the school timetable rather than from the permit.
  • Filing on the last day without allowing time for electronic filing.
  • Attaching proof of enrolment for the previous period.
  • Showing funds belonging to another person with no link to the applicant.
  • Leaving during processing without an autorización de regreso.
  • Waiting for a decision “by default”: in this procedure silence means refusal.
  • Renewing a language course year after year: there is only one renewal and it is tied to the result.

When you need an individual review

You need one if you have missed the window, if you are changing programme or school, if the expiry dates of your passport, insurance and permit overlap, if you have already filed and received a request for more documents, or if you plan to change your ground. The outcome depends on the documents in your case: check with a lawyer or gestor before the deadline.

Frequently asked questions

How long before expiry should you apply to renew a student visa in Spain?
Within the two months before the permit expires. Filing within three months after expiry is also allowed, but then a penalty procedure is possible. Filing on time extends the previous permit until the decision [1][2].
What happens if you do not apply for renewal on time?
The permit will expire, and article 55 does not provide for filing later than three months. You need to look for another ground; the consequences depend on your case. There is a separate article on late renewals: missed the residence permit renewal.
How many times can an estancia be renewed?
Up to twice for higher education and post-compulsory secondary education, once for volunteering and training activities. Each renewal is for no more than a year [1].
How long does the renewal take to process?
One month. If no decision is received within a month, the application is deemed refused by silencio administrativo. This differs from procedures where silence counts as approval [1][2].
Do you need a criminal record certificate for renewal?
It is not named in the list in article 55.3; the authority checks for any threat in Spanish databases. But additional documents may be requested, so keep up-to-date certificates to hand [1].
Can you leave Spain while the renewal is being processed?
Only with an autorización de regreso: it is valid for up to 90 days and is applied for on form EX-13 with payment of the fee via modelo 790, código 012. Without it, your return is not guaranteed [4].
Is the work authorisation renewed together with the estancia?
Yes, the work authorisation is valid for as long as the estancia and is renewed automatically if the conditions are still met. Refusal to renew the estancia also ends the work authorisation [1].
