Do you need a Spanish bank account to apply for residence?

No: we found no requirement in Real Decreto 1155/2024 or Ley 14/2013 to open an account with a Spanish bank before applying for residence. Funds can be proven by any accepted means, including accounts abroad. You will need an account after the move.

In brief
  • A Spanish bank account is not listed as a condition for applying for no lucrativa, the DNV or study: we found no such requirement in Real Decreto 1155/2024 or Ley 14/2013 [1][2].
  • For no lucrativa you need funds of 400% of IPREM per month for the applicant and 100% for each family member, for the whole period of the permit. You can prove them by any means admissible in law, including accounts abroad: the bank, the account number, the opening date, the balance on 31 December and the average balance over the year (Article 62) [1].
  • For study you need funds of 100% of IPREM per month plus 75% for the first family member and 50% for each additional one; grants, an employment contract and a guarantee from the educational institution, among other things, are taken into account (Article 35) [1].
  • For the DNV you prove remote work for a company outside Spain and your income. The amount for a single applicant as of 01.10.2026 is €2,849 per month (€34,188 per year); the calculation is covered separately [2].
  • In practice you will need an account later: RETA contributions as an autónomo are paid by direct debit (domiciliación) from an account at an institution authorised to collect Seguridad Social payments [3].

Do you need a Spanish bank account to apply for a residence permit?

No. Ley 14/2013 (the entrepreneurs’ support law that establishes the DNV) and Real Decreto 1155/2024 (Reglamento de extranjería) do not include opening an account with a Spanish bank among the conditions for applying: we searched the BOE texts for keywords relating to bank accounts and found no such condition [1][2]. The financial requirements are worded as proof of sufficient funds or income, and the means of proof is not limited to one bank.

For no lucrativa, Article 62.3 of Real Decreto 1155/2024 says that the funds can be proven by any means admissible in law, including property titles, certified cheques and credit cards accompanied by a bank certificate of the available credit, and that for foreign accounts you must additionally state the bank and its address, the full account identifier, the opening date, the balance on 31 December of the previous year and the average balance over the last year [1].

When will you actually need a Spanish account?

The law does not require an account at the application stage, but once you have the permit you usually need one. The case expressly set out in a rule: an autónomo pays RETA contributions only by direct debit (domiciliación) from an account at an institution authorised to collect Seguridad Social payments (additional provision 8 of the Reglamento General de Recaudación, as amended by Real Decreto 322/2024) [3]. What to prepare before applying if you have no Spanish account

  1. Identify your route and calculate the required amount based on IPREM, or the DNV income, as of the date you apply.

  3. Check that the account holder’s name, the currency and the dates in the documents do not contradict each other.
