Non-lucrative residence

How Much Money You Need for No Lucrativa: Calculation and Proof

For no lucrativa you need to show funds of 400% of IPREM per month for the applicant and 100% for each family member, multiplied by the length of the permit. With IPREM at €600, that is €28,800 for one year for one person and €7,200 for each relative.

Information material, not an individual legal opinion. Conditions apply to each specific situation and may change.
In brief
  • The basic formula: 400% of IPREM for the applicant and 100% of IPREM for each family member per month, for the whole term of the permit (Article 62 Reglamento). IPREM for 2026 is €600 per month [1][2].
  • The law allows two routes: sufficient funds for the period of residence, or a proven regular source of income (pension, rent, dividends). The text does not say how to combine them [1].
  • You can prove the funds by any means accepted in law: accounts, certified cheques, credit cards with a bank letter, property documents. For foreign accounts, Article 62 lists what the bank letter must contain [1].
  • The no lucrativa threshold is based on IPREM, the DNV threshold on SMI: for the DNV it is €2,849 gross per month for the applicant, and it is proven with earnings, not savings [4].
  • At renewal, the funds are proven again for the term of the renewed permit, and the authorities also look at tax payments and Seguridad Social contributions [1].

How much money you need for a no lucrativa in 2026

Article 62 of the Reglamento de extranjería (Real Decreto 1155/2024) sets the minimum amounts as a percentage of IPREM, the index used for social benefits. For the applicant it is 400% of IPREM per month, plus 100% of IPREM for each family member travelling with them. The amounts are tied to the date you apply for the visa or the renewal: use the IPREM value on that date [1].

Seguridad Social publishes IPREM for 2026: €20 per day, €600 per month, €7,200 per year [2]. That gives €2,400 per month for the applicant and €600 per month for each family member. The total is the monthly figure multiplied by the term of the permit you apply for [1].

FamilyPer monthFirst year (12 months)Renewal (24 months)

Applicant and spouse3 000 €36 000 €72 000 €
Applicant, spouse and two children4 200 €50 400 €100 800 €

We drew up this table ourselves from Articles 61, 62 and 64 and IPREM of €600. The consulate or the oficina de extranjería may assess your evidence differently, so check the exact amount for your case on the consulate’s page as of the date you apply [1][2]. Under Article 61, children and adults with disabilities count as family; parents and adult children without disabilities do not. More in no lucrativa with family.

Savings or regular income: which to use as proof

Article 62 says: “medios económicos suficientes para el periodo de residencia o una fuente de percepción periódica de ingresos”. The word “or” means either route works: either money for the whole term of the permit, or a source that regularly brings in the required amount [1].

Regular sources include a pension, rental income, dividends and interest. This is where the line with work appears: if you personally run a business or receive a salary or fees, that is no longer no lucrativa but different grounds. The topic is covered in the article no lucrativa on a pension and passive income. The text of the law does not say how to combine two sources, for example a pension for part of the amount and savings for the rest. We found no official practice on this, so it is better to show combined cases to a lawyer in advance [1].

If the funds come from holdings in companies, you need to prove that you do not work in those companies: Article 62 requires a letter from the company and a declaración responsable (a formal sworn statement) that you carry out no work activity [1].

Which documents prove your funds for a no lucrativa

The law does not limit the method: the funds can be proven in any way accepted in law. Article 62 expressly mentions property documents, certified cheques and credit cards accompanied by a bank letter on the available credit [1]. The consulate in Moscow asks for the original and a copy of the documents proving funds for the first year of the permit or a regular source of income for the applicant and family [3].

For foreign accounts and financial instruments, Article 62 lists what the bank letter must contain [1]:

  • the full name and address of the bank or credit institution;
  • full account details;
  • opening or closing dates, and for credit instruments, the dates they were granted and withdrawn;
  • the balance on 31 December of the year before the application and the average balance over the last year.

If your bank does not issue letters in this format, find this out before you apply, not at the requerimiento stage. Consulates accept foreign official documents with a translation and an apostille or legalisation, and this also affects timing [3]. On translation costs: sworn translation in Spain.

How to gather proof of funds step by step

  1. Fix the family and the term. Who is going and for how many years you are applying. This gives you the monthly and the total figure.
  2. Use IPREM on the date you apply. Check it on the Seguridad Social page. If the figure changes by the time you apply, the calculation has to be updated [2].
  3. Make a summary table. All accounts, currencies, balances on the date of the bank letter, and the source of each amount. Do not edit the bank files; put explanations on a separate sheet.
  4. Order bank letters following the list in Article 62. With the balance on 31 December and the average balance for the year [1].
  5. Prove the source. Statements showing pension payments, rental contracts, documents on the sale of the property the money came from. The law does not insist on this, but a clear origin of the money removes questions.
  6. Translate and legalise. Order translations once the consulate and its requirements are known [3].

For citizens of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, a separate problem is how the money comes in and whether it can be transferred to Spain: payments to Spain from CIS countries. A Spanish account is usually not required for no lucrativa at the visa stage, but you will need one after the move: do you need a Spanish account for a residence permit.

No lucrativa and the digital nomad visa: why the amounts can't be compared head-on

At first glance the no lucrativa threshold is lower than the DNV threshold: €2,400 versus €2,849 a month. But they test different things. No lucrativa looks at what you will live on and accepts savings. The DNV looks at earnings from remote work: the UGE asks for proof of income with payslips or invoices for three months and a bank certificate, and any shortfall can be covered with savings for the term of the permit [4]. More: how to calculate income for the DNV.

The grounds are chosen by the nature of your activity; the amount comes second. If you work, no lucrativa is not for you, however much you have in the account: no lucrativa or Digital Nomad.

What is checked when renewing a no lucrativa

Renewal does not repeat the initial check, but the financial condition is proven again: funds for the renewal term at the same percentages of IPREM (Articles 62 and 64) [1]. A renewed permit is issued for two years, so the renewal column in the table above uses 24 months. Besides funds, the oficina de extranjería may assess whether tax obligations and Seguridad Social payments were met, and whether you lived in Spain for more than 183 days a year [1]. The renewal procedure: no lucrativa renewal.

Common mistakes in proving funds

  • Calculating from SMI or from last year’s IPREM. The no lucrativa basis is only IPREM on the date you apply [1][2].
  • Ignoring the term. The monthly amount is not the amount for the permit: it has to be multiplied by the period [1].
  • Presenting property as money. Article 62 mentions property documents, but whether the value of a flat counts as “available funds” depends on the authority’s assessment. Better not to make an illiquid asset your only proof [1].
  • A joint account with no explanation. If the money is in a joint account of the spouses or in a relative’s account, you need to show that you can use it.
  • A bank letter missing the required data. No balance on 31 December or annual average, no bank address: that is a reason for a requerimiento [1].
  • Presenting proof of salary as “passive income”. Renaming changes nothing, and it risks a refusal and later problems when you change grounds [4].

When you need an individual review

You need a review if the money does not belong to you alone, came from third parties, sits in several countries and currencies, partly in cryptocurrency or property, or if part of your income comes from work and part is passive. The answer depends on your case, and it is checked by the lawyer and the gestor: a wrong application also affects the next renewal.

Frequently asked questions

How much money does one person need in the account for no lucrativa?
Under Article 62 of the Reglamento, 400% of IPREM per month for the whole term of the permit. With IPREM at €600, that is €2,400 per month, or €28,800 for the first year. This is the calculation under the law; the consulate assesses the documents itself [1][2].
How much does a family of three need?
€2,400 per month for the applicant and €600 for each family member: €3,600 per month in total, or €43,200 for the first year with IPREM at €600. Under Article 61, family means a spouse or partner, children under 18 and adult children with disabilities [1][2].
Can I prove funds for no lucrativa with a pension instead of savings?
Yes, the law allows a regular source of income instead of savings. A pension works if it is not below the threshold for your family. The text does not say how to combine a pension and savings; such cases are better reviewed in advance [1].
Is property accepted as proof of funds?
Article 62 lists property documents among acceptable evidence. But the authority decides, and the value of a flat is not the same as available money. Property is better used as a supplement, not as the only proof [1].
Do I have to keep the money in a Spanish account?
No, Article 62 allows foreign accounts and describes what the bank letter must contain: the bank’s name, account details, dates, the year-end balance and the annual average balance [1].
How much do I need to prove when renewing no lucrativa?
The same IPREM percentages for the renewal term. A renewed permit is issued for two years, so the total is calculated for 24 months. The authorities also look at taxes and Seguridad Social, and residence of more than 183 days a year [1].
Why is the amount different for the DNV and based on SMI?
The DNV assesses earnings from remote work and is tied to SMI: €2,849 gross per month for the applicant. No lucrativa assesses funds to live on without working and is tied to IPREM. The grounds are different, so the amounts cannot be compared [4].
