- Renewal for 2 years. The DNV permit is issued for up to 3 years and is then renewed for periods of 2 years, provided the conditions that gave the right to the permit still apply (Article 74 quinquies Ley 14/2013) [1].
- Filing extends the validity of the permit until the decision; the same applies if you file within 90 days after it expires, but a penalty procedure is possible (Article 76.3). According to the UGE document, you can file 60 days before expiry [1][2].
- All renewals are electronic, through the sede of the Ministry of Inclusion (Article 76.3 and the UGE page). The renewal fee is listed in the tasa table under code 038 on the ministry’s page, so check it before paying; the TIE costs €16.08 [1][4].
- You must keep meeting the conditions for the whole time the permit is valid and report any change to the UGE within 30 days (Disposición adicional séptima) [1].
- Article 76.3 does not state a deadline for the renewal decision. The 20 days and silencio positivo appear in Article 76.1 for applications under “this section”; the law does not say directly whether they apply to renewals [1].
Digital nomad residence renewal: what the law says
The DNV sequence of time limits is as follows [1]:
| Stage | Time limit | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Teleworker visa | Up to 1 year | Article 74 quater.1 |
| Permit application on the basis of the visa | 60 calendar days before the visa expires | Article 74 quater.3 |
| Permit | Up to 3 years; if longer than 6 months, a TIE is required | Articles 74 quinquies.2, 76.2 |
| Renewal | Periods of 2 years while the conditions are still met | Articles 74 quinquies.3, 76.3 |
| Filing the renewal | Extends the validity of the permit until the decision; also allowed within 90 days after expiry | Article 76.3 |
Article 76.3 also says that the Dirección General de Migraciones may request reports to check that the conditions are still met, and that renewals are processed electronically only [1]. The UGE page confirms this: applications under Ley 14/2013 and all subsequent documents are filed electronically through the sede of the Ministry of Inclusion [4]. The only UGE document on renewals (February 2018) describes the filing window as 60 calendar days before expiry and 90 days after; the document was written before the DNV existed, so you need to check whether it is still relevant for the DNV [2].
What the UGE checks when renewing a digital nomad visa
We have not found an official list of checks specifically for DNV renewal. The law requires the holder to keep meeting the conditions that gave access to the permit for the whole period (Disposición adicional séptima), and the authorities may check them after the permit is issued [1]. On that basis, it makes sense to confirm the following [1][3]:
| Condition | Legal basis | What to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Remote work for a company outside Spain; for the self-employed, no more than 20% of activity for Spanish companies | Article 74 bis | Contract or employer’s letter; for the self-employed, contracts and invoices |
| Sufficient income (gross) | Article 62.3(f); thresholds as per the UGE document [3] | Payslips or invoices and a bank statement; at least €2,849 per month for the applicant under the current SMI |
| Health insurance | Article 62.3(e) | A valid policy from an insurer authorised in Spain [3] |
| Social security | UGE documents | Alta in the Régimen General with a company registered as a non-resident employer, or in RETA for the self-employed [3] |
| No threat to public order | Article 62.7 | Passport and details for requesting certificates; the authorities may request reports themselves [1] |
The law names taxes and Seguridad Social contributions as obligations that it does not waive (Article 62.5) [1]. We do not know whether the UGE checks them directly when renewing a DNV: prepare your tax returns and proof of contributions in advance.
How and when to apply for renewal: the steps
- 3-4 months before expiry, check the conditions: contract, income at the current SMI, insurance, alta in Seguridad Social. For income, see how the threshold is calculated for 2026.
- Draw up a calendar. File within the window of 60 days before expiry, as in the UGE document, without waiting for the last few days [2].
- Pay the fee before filing and attach the receipt: according to the UGE document, it is part of the general set of documents for renewal [2]. The renewal amount is listed in the tasa table under code 038 on the ministry’s page, so check it before paying; the TIE costs €16.08 as of 01.10.2026.
- File electronically through the sede of the Ministry of Inclusion, yourself or through a representative (the UGE document says the application is filed by the applicant or by a representative with authority to act) [2][4]. On the MI-T application form, tick “Renovación” [2][4].
- Watch for notifications. If you receive a requerimiento, reply within the stated deadline: how to respond to a UGE request.
- After the decision, apply for your TIE: if the permit is for more than 6 months, you need the card [1].
A Supreme Court ruling of 8 July 2026 (BOE 22 September 2026) struck down the general obligation to deal with the authorities electronically set out in Article 197.2 of the Reglamento [5]. In our reading, this does not apply to the DNV: electronic processing of renewals is written into Ley 14/2013 itself (Article 76.3) [1][5]. How the UGE applies this still needs to be confirmed.
Which documents are needed and what the authority does not publish
The only public UGE guidance on renewals (February 2018) lists a general set: the application form marked “Renovación”, a copy of the TIE (if you have been in Spain for more than 6 months), a current passport and the fee receipt; for family members, a declaration that the relationship and cohabitation continue and a copy of the passport [2]. The document has no separate list for the DNV, because the DNV appeared later [2].
For the initial application, the UGE lists documents that are worth keeping at hand for renewal as well: income shown by payslips or invoices for three months with a bank statement in the applicant’s name, the employer’s letter and proof of social security [3]. The UGE does not require the three months of working relationship at the initial stage from people who already hold a permit or visa, because it has already been proven [3]. The document does not say whether it has to be checked again at renewal.
What to change when the SMI is updated and if your income has fallen
The income thresholds are tied to the SMI. For 2026 this is €2,849 per month (€34,188 per year) for the applicant [3]. The sources do not say which SMI applies to a renewal filed in January or February before the decree is published, or whether the UGE compares income at renewal with the new SMI. The safe option is to prove the threshold currently in force. If your income is lower, the UGE document allows you to cover the difference with savings for the whole term of the permit [3]; even this option is worth agreeing on before filing.
Change of employer or client, travel and absences
Report any change in conditions to the UGE within 30 days (Disposición adicional séptima) [1]. Changing employer on a DNV is a separate question; settle it before applying. Absence from Spain: Ley 14/2013 sets no minimum period of residence for the DNV. The 183-day limit applies to no lucrativa renewal (Article 64.2 f of the Reglamento), not to the DNV [1][6]. Tax residence is governed by other rules: tax residence and the residence permit. Agree any travel during the renewal in advance.
Late applications and administrative silence
If you miss the window, filing within 90 days after expiry still extends the validity of the permit, but a penalty procedure is possible (Article 76.3) [1]. After 90 days, the law no longer protects such a filing; the next step has to be decided individually: a different ground or a new application. What to do if the decision deadline has passed: overstayed residence permit: what to do, how long the UGE takes to process a DNV application.
What happens after five years
Under Ley 14/2013, renewals are for two-year periods, so three years plus the first renewal make five years. For larga duración the Reglamento requires five years of legal and continuous residence (Articles 176 and 183); years on a DNV count: they are temporary residence within articles 31 and 32 of Ley Orgánica 4/2000, the Reglamento makes no exception for Ley 14/2013, and its additional provision 6 expressly links that residence to larga duración and citizenship.
For larga duración UE you also need regular resources and insurance, and you can apply within the two months before your current permit expires [6]. For citizenship the general period is 10 years, so five years on a DNV do not open it. How the statuses differ: temporary or permanent residence, how many years until citizenship.
Common mistakes when renewing a digital nomad visa
- They wait for the last days of the window and end up overstaying.
- They renew on the basis of conditions from three years ago: income, insurance and contract must meet the conditions on the day of filing, and the original package from three years ago does not count [1].
- They do not report a change of employer within 30 days [1].
- They keep working for clients with more than 20% of activity for Spanish companies [1].
- They put off the alta in Seguridad Social: the UGE names it as a condition, and a breach can lead to the permit being terminated [3].
- They take the windows from second-hand accounts: in the law, the 90 days come after expiry, while the UGE document gives 60 days before expiry [1][2].
