How the calculator works

The calculator takes your dates and lays out the deadlines from Ley 14/2013 and the Reglamento de extranjería. The table lists the dates in order, each with its article.

Months and years are counted date to date, as in article 30.4 Ley 39/2015[3]: if the month has no such day, the period ends on the last day of the month. If the last day falls on a weekend or holiday, the same article moves it to the next working day. The calculator does not make that shift, so its dates are slightly more cautious.

If no approval date is entered, the calculator assumes you filed on the first possible day and UGE answered on the last day of its time limit. That is the legal worst case, not a forecast. How long UGE takes in practice and what pauses the clock: how long UGE takes to decide a DNV.

The Regulation counts the TIE month from the approval of the authorization or from the day it takes effect, depending on registration with Seguridad Social[2]. The calculator uses the approval date, the earliest option. What to get done in those weeks: the first 30 days after DNV approval.

The 60-day renewal window is not in the law: it comes from a 2018 UGE document on renewals under Ley 14/2013[4]. The law itself says that filing extends the authorization until the decision, and that you can still file within 90 days after expiry, though a sanction procedure may follow[1]. Article 76.3 sets no separate decision time for renewals. In detail: renewing a DNV after 3 years.

Long-term residence is only a guide here. The calculator counts five years from the visa issue or the authorization approval. If you lived legally in Spain before the DNV, the period may start earlier. Absences longer than six months in a row or more than ten months in total over five years break continuity[2].

  • Public holidays are not included.
  • Pauses caused by a requerimiento, a request for documents, are not included.
  • Different dates for family members and a change of company are not included.

Frequently asked questions

When can I apply for a DNV after starting with the company?
After three months: the relationship with the company must cover at least the last three months before filing (article 74 ter Ley 14/2013)[1]. The company itself must have been operating for at least a year.
When do I apply for the authorization if I came on a visa?
In the visa's last 60 calendar days (article 74 quater.3 Ley 14/2013)[1]. The conditions on which the visa was granted must still be met.
How long does UGE take to decide?
By law up to 20 days from electronic filing, and under the general rule of Ley 39/2015 these are working days[1] [3]. If there is no decision, the application is deemed approved. A request for documents pauses the clock.
When must I request the TIE?
In person, within one month of the day the authorization was approved or took effect (article 209.1 RD 1155/2024)[2]. The card is needed if the authorization is for more than six months (article 76.2 Ley 14/2013)[1].
What if I miss the renewal deadline?
If you file within 90 days after the authorization ends, it is still extended until the decision, but a sanction procedure may follow (article 76.3 Ley 14/2013)[1]. It is safer to file in the window 60 days before expiry[4].
After how many years on a DNV can I apply for long-term residence?
As a guide, five years of legal and continuous residence in Spain (article 176 RD 1155/2024)[2]. Absences of more than six months in a row or ten months in total break the period.
