- Main channel: sede electrónica. Applications under Ley 14/2013 and all documents relating to them are submitted electronically only [1][4].
- An electronic notification is deemed rejected if you have not opened it within 10 calendar days; if you open it, it is deemed received at that moment [5].
- The general service for checking the status of extranjería cases accepts SMS messages to 651 714 610: “NIE” and the number, or “EXPE” and the 15-character file number. The reply is for information only [3].
- The UGE answers by email at movilidad.internacional@inclusion.gob.es and by phone on 91 363 32 75 and 91 363 32 67 [2].
- If there is no decision within 20 days, an application under Ley 14/2013 is deemed approved (silencio positivo) [4].
Where can you find your application status at the UGE?
The main source of information about your case is the sede electrónica of the Ministry of Inclusion and the notifications you receive through it. On its page about submitting applications, the UGE states that applications under Ley 14/2013 and all related documentation, including requests for documents, additions, appeals (recursos) and communications, are submitted electronically through the sede electrónica [1]. Under the law, the UGE handles the procedure itself telematically, and the permit is issued by the Dirección General de Migraciones [4].
You need an electronic certificate to apply [1]. If you have entrusted the application to a representative, ask them for a copy of the registry receipt and confirmation of who receives notifications and at which address: this determines the date from which deadlines are counted. How the certificate and the representative’s access are set up is covered in the article on the certificado digital.
How do electronic notifications work and when are they deemed received?
A notification is deemed received at the moment you or your representative open its contents. This is the rule in article 43 of Ley 39/2015. If electronic notification is mandatory or you chose it yourself, and nobody accessed it for ten calendar days, it is deemed rejected [5]. The practical takeaway: agree on who logs into the sede and how quickly they tell you about new documents.
In addition, article 53 of Ley 39/2015 gives the interested party the right to find out at any time the status of the proceedings, the body responsible for the decision, the acts issued and the meaning of silence, and, where dealings are electronic, to view this information through the Punto de Acceso General [5]. How exactly this works in your case depends on which services the body has connected. For the request for missing documents itself, see the article on the requerimiento.
What official ways are there to check the status?
There are four confirmed official ways, but not all of them are known to cover UGE cases.
| Method | What it gives you | Suitable for UGE? |
|---|---|---|
| Notifications in the sede electrónica | Legally binding decisions and requests [1][5] | Yes, this is the main channel |
| UGE email and phone numbers | A reply from the unit’s staff [2] | Yes, these are the UGE’s own contacts |
| SMS to 651 714 610 or phone 902 02 22 22 | Status “under review” or “resolved”, for information only [3] | Not specified: the page refers to Delegaciones y Subdelegaciones |
| Punto de Acceso General | Access to information and notifications under article 53 [5] | Depends on what the body has connected |
The SMS service works like this: in the message you write NIE, a space and your number (for example, NIE X00000111L), or EXPE, a space and the 15-character file number; the reply comes at no extra charge, with a note that the data are for information only [3]. The service is not available to EU citizens [3]. For checking extranjería cases outside the UGE in general, see the article on checking your expediente.
How do you write to the UGE and what should you include?
You can email movilidad.internacional@inclusion.gob.es or call 91 363 32 75 and 91 363 32 67 [2]. An email is shorter and more useful if it is specific:
- Full name as in your passport, NIE if you already have one, and passport number.
- Submission date and registry number from the receipt.
- Ground of the application (for example, teletrabajo de carácter internacional) and whether a representative submitted it.
- One specific question: status, whether there is a requerimiento, decision date.
The sources do not give a response time for such an email, and it does not replace a formal reply to a request for documents. If a UGE letter has arrived through the sede, you must reply there, within the deadline stated in the request.
What to do if 20 days have passed with no reply?
The maximum time for a decision on a UGE application is twenty days from electronic submission. If there is no decision, the application is deemed approved by silencio positivo; submitting the application extends your previous stay or residence status until the decision. This is what article 76 of Ley 14/2013 says [4]. Suspension of the time limit because of a requerimiento, counting of working days and the consequences of silence are covered in the article on UGE time limits for the DNV.
If the time limit has passed, put together a timeline: submission date, receipt, all requests and your replies with dates. With it, it is easier to approach a specialist. How silence is confirmed in a document, and whether banks and government bodies accept it, depends on your case: consult a lawyer or a gestor.
If you are still preparing to apply, the order of steps is set out in the DNV route card, and a general overview of moving to Barcelona is on the page Residence permit in Barcelona.
