Proof of residence for arraigo: how to prove 2 years in Spain

Two years in Spain for arraigo can be proven with any documents bearing your details, ideally issued by Spanish public authorities: padrón, medical records, municipal paperwork. Private documents work as a supplement if they cover the dates well enough.

Information material, not an individual legal opinion. Conditions apply to each specific situation and may change.
In brief
  • What the ministry asks for: documents that contain your identification details, preferably issued or registered by the Spanish administration. Examples: padrón, hospital admission, appointments in the public health system, any municipal, regional and state papers [2].
  • If there are gaps in your registration, the instruction also lists private documents in your name: medical and educational records, money transfers, bank transactions, contracts and receipts, rental [3].
  • In Barcelona you register on the padrón at the address where you actually live: the law requires the municipality to enter in the register foreign nationals domiciled there, regardless of whether they hold a permit [9].
  • For the informe de integración in Catalonia you need the “volant d'empadronament històric” or other acceptable proof of two years [4].
  • Absences from Spain must not exceed 90 days in two years: tickets and boarding passes help prove your trips [6].

What proof of stay is accepted for arraigo

The ministry’s information sheet (Hoja 28) requires documents proving continuous stay of at least two years. They must contain your identification details, and preferably they should be issued or registered by the Spanish administration. Examples from the sheet: padrón certificates, certificates of hospital admission or of appointments with a doctor in the public system, any municipal, regional or state documents showing that you were in Spain [2]. The two-year condition is set out in Article 126, letter b, of the Reglamento [1]. The list is not closed: foreign and private papers are not prohibited, but the ministry names documents from the Spanish administration as preferred.

The two-year condition itself and the permitted absences are covered in the article how many years you need to live in Spain for arraigo. This one is about documents.

Instruction SEM 4/2025 accepts private documents as evidence if the informe de integración social was not issued on time (within a month), and Hoja 28 gives preference to documents from the Spanish administration [2][3]. In practice this means the padrón and medical records form the core, and private papers fill the gaps.

How to build a two-year timeline

  1. Write down the dates: entry into Spain, changes of address, all trips outside the country.
  2. Draw up a table covering 24 months and, for each month, mark a document that shows you in Spain. We recommend this table as a working method: the authorities do not require it.
  3. Fill the gaps first with documents from public bodies, then with private documents in your name.
  4. For trips abroad, attach tickets, boarding passes, stamps and, if needed, bank transactions in another country.
  5. Check the spelling of your name and the document numbers: when data differ, the Generalitat goes by the passport [5].
  6. Arrange translations and apostilles for foreign documents: translation by a sworn translator, and for public documents an apostille as well [2][7].

One document per month does not guarantee success, but two years with a single padrón and no other traces look weaker than padrón plus medical records and bank statements.

Padrón in Barcelona: what you need to know

The law requires the ayuntamiento to enter in the padrón foreign nationals domiciled in the municipality (Article 6.3 of Ley Orgánica 4/2000) [9]. Details for Barcelona: how to register at your address and how to get a volante de empadronamiento. The Ajuntament issues the volant de residència (confirms registration in Barcelona) and the volant de convivència (where and with whom you are registered) [8]. Arraigo needs a history, so ask the Ajuntament for the historical version of the certificate.

For the informe de integración in Catalonia, the Generalitat explicitly names the “volant d'empadronament històric” [4]. If there are gaps in your registration, the Generalitat’s criteria accept documents that place you in Spain during that period: public ones first, then private ones [5]. What to do if you registered only recently is covered in the article informe de integración in Catalonia.

Example of a two-year timeline

This is an illustrative example: it shows the principle and does not promise a result. The core is an unbroken padrón line, with dated documents between registration dates and at the points where the address changes.

PeriodMain documentAdditional documents
Months 1-6Padrón, address 1Bank transactions, medical appointment
Months 7-12Padrón, address 1Rental contract, electricity and phone bills
Months 13-18Padrón, address 2 (date of change)New rental contract, money transfers
Months 19-24Padrón, address 2Educational documents, bank transactions

If you travelled abroad, add a row with tickets and dates. This way the lawyer and the oficina see a coherent picture rather than a set of scattered papers.

How to request missing documents

The ministry has no official list of how to request documents, so below is our working list. Request the registration certificate from the Ajuntament where you are on the padrón (online or by appointment) [8]. Ask your bank for statements for the whole period, for each account. Request the history of your visits to the public health system from the centre where you are registered as a patient. Get certificates of studies and courses from the school or course provider. Collect rental contracts and housing payments for each address. Check every document for your name and a date, then keep a copy in a separate folder.

Documents from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan

Sometimes the only traces of your stay in Spain are in documents from your country of citizenship: foreign bank statements with transactions in Spain, money transfers to relatives, tickets from foreign airlines, correspondence with the consulate. You can attach such papers, but they are foreign: public ones must be apostilled or legalised, and the Spanish translation must be done by a sworn translator [2][7]. We have not found how the oficina de extranjería weighs private foreign documents against Spanish ones. So do not build your proof on them alone. Whether a specific document from Russia needs an apostille is covered in the article apostille on Russian documents.

Which documents are best avoided

Do not use backdated documents, rental contracts and residence certificates not backed by real payments and registration, or other people’s accounts and details. An unreliable document harms the whole application and may have separate consequences for you. If you have nothing to prove some periods with, it is more honest to tell the lawyer and wait than to fill the gap with a dubious certificate. Also, do not send your passport and certificates through open channels: use secure transfer, and only to the person handling your case.

Common mistakes when gathering evidence

  • A document without your name. The pack must contain identification details, otherwise the evidence is not counted [2].
  • Different spellings of your name. Transliteration varies between documents, and when there are discrepancies the Generalitat looks at the passport [5].
  • Relying on the padrón alone. It is a single document and does not show your activity in the country [2].
  • Foreign documents without translation and apostille. Public documents must be apostilled or legalised and translated by a sworn translator [7].
  • Ignoring trips abroad. Three trips of 35 days each exceed 90 days [6].
  • Collecting documents without a plan. First decide on the type of arraigo and the filing date, then order certificates.

When you need an individual review

If the padrón has no entries for part of the period, you had several addresses or cities, you lived without a rental contract, you have long absences, or you previously filed documents for another procedure, prepare the documents with a lawyer before filing. We cannot say in advance exactly what the oficina de extranjería will accept in your case.

If the office considers the file incomplete, it will send a requerimiento: you have no more than 15 days to respond, otherwise the application is closed as withdrawn (Article 130.3 of the Reglamento) [1]. Under Article 130.1 the application is filed by the foreign national personally; filing through a representative is possible under Article 197.4 (notarial power of attorney or apud acta in the electronic register, or through convenio participants or the Registro de Colaboradores); whether you need this in your case is for a lawyer to decide [1].

How we can help

The ReloVictory team in Barcelona helps build a timeline of your stay, assess how strong your documents are, prepare translations and apostilles and put together the arraigo pack; the application is filed by the team’s lawyer under a power of attorney or by you, as set out in the contract. We are not responsible for the authorities’ response times. Book: consultation, section arraigo. Which document is needed at which step is shown in the arraigo route card, and the general procedure after moving is described in the section residence permit in Barcelona.

Frequently asked questions

Which documents prove residence for arraigo?
Any documents with your details, preferably issued by the Spanish administration: padrón, medical papers from the public system, municipal and other official documents. Private documents in your name are accepted in addition: bank, rental, money transfers. [2][3]
Is the padrón enough to prove two years?
The padrón is required and counts as the basic document, but on its own it does not show your activity in the country. To be safe, add medical, educational and bank documents and a rental contract. What is sufficient is decided by the oficina de extranjería. [2][3]
Can I register on the padrón in Barcelona without a residence permit?
The law requires the ayuntamiento to enter in the padrón foreign nationals living in the municipality. Which housing documents are needed is stated on the Ajuntament website. [8][9]
Do documents from Russia or Ukraine need to be translated?
Yes, foreign public documents must be apostilled or legalised and translated by a sworn translator. Spanish documents do not need translating. Private foreign papers are better translated; check with a lawyer. [2][7]
How do I prove trips out of Spain?
With tickets, boarding passes, stamps and bank transactions in another country. They are needed to show that your absence over two years does not exceed 90 days, as the authorities count it. [6]
What if I have nothing to prove part of the period with?
Collect private documents in your name: bank, rental, medical and educational papers, money transfers. If a gap remains, discuss it with a lawyer before filing and do not fill it with documents that cannot be verified. [3][5]
