What IBAN and SEPA are and how they work in Spain

IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is an international bank account number; in Spain it has 24 characters and starts with ES. SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is the area where a euro payment is processed on the same terms as a domestic one.

In brief
  • A Spanish IBAN has 24 characters: the two letters ES and 22 digits. It identifies an account unambiguously and is the single number used for SEPA transfers and direct debits [1][2].
  • SEPA covers the 27 EU countries and 3 EEA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), as well as a number of other territories; the list is kept by the Banco de España [3].
  • Timing: a standard SEPA transfer arrives on the next business day after the payee’s bank receives the funds; an instant one takes no more than 10 seconds, at any time of day [3].
  • Charges are shared: the payer’s bank charges its own customer, and the payee’s bank charges its own [3].
  • A wrong IBAN is hard to fix. A bank that executed a transfer to the number you gave is not liable, and checking the payee before sending has been mandatory for eurozone banks since 9 October 2025 [4][7].

What is an IBAN?

IBAN is the international format for a payment account number. The Banco de España calls it the unique account identifier and states that for SEPA countries, including Spain, it is the account number used to identify the payee [1]. According to the Banco de España, a Spanish IBAN has 24 characters: two country letters and 22 digits [2].

PositionsWhat it means
1-2Country code (ES for Spain)
3-4IBAN check digits
5-8Bank code, assigned by the Banco de España
9-12Branch code
13-14Two more check digits
15-24Customer account number (10 digits)

The check digits help catch missing, repeated and mistyped characters, so a typo usually shows up as an error as soon as you enter the number [2][4].

What is SEPA and which countries are in it?

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is a system in which euro payments work the same way, whether they are domestic or cross-border [3]. The Banco de España states that it covers the 27 EU countries and 3 EEA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), plus a number of other territories [3]. The legal basis is Reglamento (UE) 260/2012, which introduced the IBAN as the single account identifier for euro transfers and direct debits [6].

SEPA rules apply only to payments in euros. A payment in another currency or from a country outside the area does not follow them; the conditions and timing then depend on intermediary banks. Check the current list to see whether your country is part of SEPA.

How does a SEPA transfer work and how long does it take?

  1. The payee gives you their IBAN and name; the payment must be in euros.
  2. You set up the transfer at the bank or in the app. Before sending, a eurozone bank offers to check that the payee’s name matches the IBAN: the result is “match”, “close match” or “no match” [4].
  3. The bank debits the amount. A standard transfer reaches the payee’s account no later than the next business day after the payee’s bank receives the funds, and an instant one in no more than 10 seconds, around the clock, any day of the year [3].
  4. Charges: the payer’s bank charges its costs to you, and the payee’s bank charges its own customer (the “shared” model) [3].

Can someone refuse to accept an account with a Spanish IBAN?

No, if it is a euro account within the SEPA area. Article 9 of Reglamento (UE) 260/2012 prohibits requiring the account to be located in a particular country: the Banco de España calls refusing a payment from a foreign IBAN “IBAN discrimination” [5][6]. EU residents with a euro payment account have the right to receive and send payments within the EU regardless of the country code in the IBAN [5].

If you are refused, the Banco de España advises telling the organisation that it is required to accept IBANs from other EU countries, sending a written complaint and, if that does not work, contacting the competent authority. For issues with payment service providers and B2B matters, write to the Banco de España (paymentsystems@bde.es); for consumer disputes, contact the consumer protection authority of your region [5].

What happens if you get the IBAN wrong?

The payer is usually responsible for a mistake in the number. The Banco de España explains that the bank automatically checks only the account identifier; the other details in a SEPA transfer serve as a message to the payee [1]. If the bank executed the transfer to the IBAN you gave, it is not liable [4].

Since 9 October 2025, eurozone banks must offer a free payee check before sending (Reglamento (UE) 2024/886) [7]: if the system shows a mismatch and you send anyway, the payment goes through, and neither the bank nor the payee is liable for the error [4]. For large amounts, double-check the IBAN, and if you make a mistake, contact your bank immediately: a refund is not guaranteed.

What depends on your case

Limits on instant payments, charges and the timing for receiving payments from outside SEPA are set by the bank. Payments from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan are not covered here: the answer depends on the country, the bank and the currency. How to open an account is described in opening an account with a Spanish bank, and the difference between traditional and online banks in online bank or traditional bank. If you need an account before you get your NIE, read an account in Spain without an NIE, and on transfers from Russia and the CIS: sending money to Spain. Frequently asked questions

How many characters does a Spanish IBAN have?
24 characters: the two letters ES, two IBAN check digits, then the 20 digits of the national account number. That number contains the bank code, the branch code, two more check digits and the 10-digit account number. The structure is the same for all Spanish accounts. [2]
What is SEPA in simple terms?
An area where a euro payment goes through on the same terms as a domestic one. It covers the 27 EU countries, 3 EEA countries and a number of territories on the Banco de España list. Accounts in it are identified by their IBAN. [3][6]
How long does a SEPA transfer take?
A standard transfer arrives on the next business day after the payee’s bank receives the funds; an instant one takes no more than 10 seconds, around the clock, including weekends. Check the exact timing in your bank’s terms. [3]
Who pays the charges for a SEPA transfer?
The shared charges model applies: the payer’s bank charges its own customer, and the payee’s bank charges its own. The amount is set by the bank under your contract. [3]
What should I do if a bank or company will not accept a payment from my IBAN?
Refusing because of the IBAN’s country is prohibited by Article 9 of Reglamento (UE) 260/2012. Tell the organisation about its obligation, file a written complaint, and then contact the Banco de España or your region’s consumer protection authority. [5][6]
Can a transfer sent to the wrong IBAN be recovered?
A bank that executed a transfer to the IBAN you gave is not liable; a refund is not guaranteed and depends on the payee. So check the number and use the payee check that banks must offer free of charge. [4]
