- Arraigo socioformativo (Article 127.d of the Reglamento) requires two years of residence, enrolment in or attendance of a programme from the list, and an informe de integración social. The permit is issued for one year [1].
- Eligible: post-compulsory education (bachillerato, ciclos de grado medio and equivalents), professional certificates at levels 1-3, in-person adult education and employment service programmes for shortage occupations. University, language courses and grado superior are not on the list [1][3].
- If enrolment has an official deadline, the application is filed within the two months before it opens. Proof of enrolment (matrícula) must be submitted within three months of the decision, otherwise the permit is terminated [1][4].
- You may work as an employee for no more than 30 hours a week, paid at least the SMI or the collective agreement (convenio) rate pro rata. This limit is not expressly extended to self-employment, but the conditions need to be checked [1].
- From 16 April 2026 you cannot apply for arraigo if you hold a stay or residence permit or have a procedure for one under way. The same socioformativo permit cannot be obtained twice within three years [2][3].
What arraigo socioformativo is and when to choose it
Arraigo socioformativo is one of the five types of arraigo, a temporary residence permit for exceptional circumstances. Legal basis: Article 127.d of the Reglamento de Extranjería (Real Decreto 1155/2024) [1]. It is chosen by adults who have lived in Spain for two years or more and want to finish school, gain a vocational qualification or a profession in demand on the labour market. Overview: types of arraigo.
It is not a student visa or a student stay. An estancia por estudios is granted for the period of study, on a visa from abroad or in some cases from within Spain, whereas arraigo socioformativo is applied for from Spain by people who have no other permit. Comparison: study estancia in Spain. Choosing a programme just for a document you do not intend to use for its purpose is not a good idea: the permit is terminated if study is not confirmed [1].
Which training programmes qualify for arraigo socioformativo
Article 127.d refers to Articles 52.1.b and 52.1.e.5 and to adult education, and Annex II of SEM Instruction 1/2025 sorts them into categories [1][3].
| Category | What is included |
|---|---|
| Post-compulsory education (Article 52.1.b) | Bachillerato, ciclos formativos de grado medio, intermediate-level arts, sports and music and dance programmes, curso de especialización leading to a título de Especialista, full-time and with a recognised título [1][3] |
| Professional certificates (Article 52.1.e.5) | A full programme leading to a certificado profesional at levels 1, 2 and 3 of the vocational training system, grado C [1][3] |
| Adult education | In-person compulsory education for adults: enseñanzas iniciales, ESPA [1][3] |
| Employment service programmes | Training promoted by the employment service for occupations in the shortage occupations catalogue [1] |
The format may be in-person or blended, but at least 50% of the programme must be attended in person at the centre [3]. An application for admission is also acceptable: the instruction accepts enrolment, attendance and a submitted application for admisión [3]. University, master’s degrees, language courses and ciclo de grado superior are not on the list; for these you apply for an estancia por estudios: language courses and estancia. Whether a particular programme qualifies depends on its official status and the centre’s registration in the official register, not on its advertising. We do not recommend or select schools.
General requirements and informe de integración
Socioformativo does not exempt you from the general conditions of Article 126: two years without interruption, clean criminal records, the fee paid and, from 16 April 2026, no other stay or residence permit and no open procedure for one [1][2]. How to count the two years: how many years you need to live in Spain for arraigo. The 2026 Tribunal Supremo rulings did not affect Article 127.d [6].
On top of this, Article 127.d requires an informe de integración social under the procedure of Article 127.c [1]. It is issued by the authority of the autonomous community where you live; in Catalonia, by the Generalitat. The procedure, documents, timeframes and cost are covered in the article informe de integración in Catalonia. A receipt for paying for a course does not replace it [1].
Application deadlines and proof of enrolment
This is where the most common risk lies. If enrolment has an official period for formalising the matrícula, the socioformativo application is filed within the two months before that period opens. Proof of enrolment must be submitted to the oficina de extranjería within three months of notification of the decision [1][4]. If it is not submitted, the permit is terminated [1].
In justified cases you may submit enrolment in a different programme from the one planned, provided it also meets the requirements [1]. If the programme is cancelled, get written confirmation and check whether a replacement is allowed before switching to another course on your own. For employment service programmes, participation is confirmed, and failure to take part also leads to termination [1].
The instruction adds that one person cannot obtain socioformativo more than once in three years [3]. Draw up a single calendar: the filing deadline, the start of admissions at the training centre, the three months for enrolment and the validity of the informe.
Can you work on arraigo socioformativo?
Yes, but with a limit. The permit allows employed work of no more than 30 hours a week in total, paid at least the SMI or the convenio rate pro rata [1]. The SMI for 2026 is €1,221 a month over 14 payments, €17,094 a year for full-time work. Your schedule must leave room for study: this is a condition for keeping the permit.
On self-employment, Article 131 says something different: the 30-hour limit is worded only for employed work [1]. We have not officially checked how this fits with oficina practice and the obligation to study. Do not tell an employer you can work “any hours”: check your status before signing a schedule.
Applying step by step
- Check the conditions of Article 126: two years without interruption and no other permit or procedure for one [1][2].
- Choose a programme from the list. Ask the centre for written confirmation of the programme’s status, format, dates and enrolment deadline.
- Request the informe de integración so that it is valid on the day you apply.
- Gather criminal record certificates from the countries where you lived in the five years before entering Spain (with apostille and sworn translation), proof of residence and the programme documents [3][5].
- File form EX-10 at the oficina de extranjería, taking the enrolment rule into account. Under Article 130.1 the application is filed by the foreign national in person; filing by a representative is possible under Article 197.4 (notarial power of attorney or apud acta in the electronic register, or through convenio participants or the Registro de Colaboradores); whether you need one in your case is for a lawyer to decide [1]. The fee under modelo 790, código 052, is paid at the time of filing when you apply online, or within ten working days when you apply in person [4][7].
- The Reglamento does not set a decision deadline; the ministry’s information sheets give three months and treat silence as refusal [4]. Once approved, confirm enrolment within three months and book your TIE within one month [1][4].
Renewal and what comes next
Renewal conditions depend on the programme. For ciclos formativos grado básico and medio you need a certificate from the centre confirming that you have moved on to the second year. If you finished the programme early, you need the diploma or certificate plus an active job search with registration at the employment service [1][4]. Renewal is filed in the two months before expiry and up to three months after [1]. After graduating you can switch to a residence and work permit under Article 191, but everything depends on the employer and income: after study: residence permit and work.
Common mistakes
- Paying for a course before checking the list. The name and a certificate do not prove that the programme qualifies [1][3].
- Missing the deadline for confirming enrolment. Three months after the decision, otherwise the permit is terminated [1].
- Submitting an out-of-date informe. The issue date must still be valid at the time of filing; details in the article on the informe.
- Counting on any kind of work. Employed work is allowed up to 30 hours a week [1].
- Applying while a study extension is under way. This is an obstacle under point h [2].
- Choosing university. For higher education the right route is estancia por estudios, not this type [1][3].
When you need an individual review
If the programme is on the edge of the list (blended format, an online component, an employment service programme), the enrolment deadline comes before you get the informe, you have had absences of more than 90 days, or another procedure is running in parallel. Here a lawyer decides on the basis of your documents, not a general article.
