How the calculator works

Article 74 bis of Ley 14/2013 allows a professional on the digital nomad visa to work for companies in Spain as long as this work does not exceed 20 % of their total professional activity[1]. The UGE adds that work for a Spanish company must be under a professional contract, and the link with the foreign company the application is based on must continue[2].

The calculator measures the share by revenue: Spanish revenue divided by total revenue for the same period. Exactly 20 % is allowed. The maximum Spanish revenue is a quarter of the foreign revenue: with €30,000 from abroad you can earn up to €7,500 in Spain.

  • Share = Spanish revenue / (Spanish + foreign) × 100 %.
  • Maximum Spanish revenue = foreign revenue / 4.
  • Foreign revenue needed when over the limit = Spanish revenue × 4.

The law does not define how or over what period the share is measured[1]. Changes to the admission conditions are reported to the UGE within 30 days (additional provision 7 of Ley 14/2013)[1]. In depth: the 20 % rule on the digital nomad visa.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 20 % rule apply to employees?
No. An employee on the digital nomad visa cannot work for a Spanish employer at all. The 20 % rule applies to professionals and freelancers. [1]
Is the 20 % measured by revenue or by time?
The law sets no method. The calculator uses revenue for one period, which is easy to prove with invoices and statements. If you measure by hours, keep records and contracts. [1]
Can I have one large Spanish client?
Yes, as long as that client is no more than 20 % of your total activity and the link with the foreign company continues. [1][2]
What happens if I go over 20 %?
The permit condition is breached. Report it to the UGE within 30 days and look at moving to cuenta propia or emprendedor: switching from the digital nomad visa to another permit. [1]
