The pros of living in Spain
- School. Education is compulsory and free for foreign children up to 16, and up to 18 they also have a right to the next stage[4].
- Healthcare. Foreigners receive care under Spanish health legislation[4]. In Catalonia the TSI card is issued after registering your address (padrón)[5][8].
- Travel. With a Spanish permit and passport you can travel within the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180 days without a visa[7].
- Stable status. After five years of legal residence you can obtain long-term residence and live and work like Spaniards. More: what a Spanish residence permit gives.
The cons to know in advance
- Housing prices. Average rent in Barcelona is almost equal to the minimum wage[1][3]. With income from abroad this is manageable; on a local salary it hurts.
- Taxes. After 183 days a year you are tax resident. In Catalonia the two scales together reach 50% on the top band[6]. More: taxes in Spain for foreigners.
- Red tape. Appointments (cita previa) with the police and offices can be hard to get, and every step (padrón, NIE, TIE card) is separate.
- Language. Barcelona has two official languages, Spanish and Catalan. Without Spanish, offices and doctors are hard going. More: do you need Catalan.
Who life in Spain suits
It suits best those whose income does not depend on the local job market: remote employees and freelancers on the digital nomad visa, retirees and people with savings on non-lucrative residence. How to choose a ground and how much money you need: moving to Spain from Russia in 2026.
