Do you need Spanish for a residence permit in Spain? Where it is required

As a rule, no: no language exam is required for residence under DNV, no lucrativa, study, employment or cuenta propia. Spanish is needed for citizenship (DELE at A2 level) and counts as an integration effort for arraigo and renewals.

Information material, not an individual legal opinion. Conditions apply to each specific situation and may change.
In brief
  • As a rule, you do not need Spanish for the residence permit itself. We found no language requirements in Regulation 1155/2024 for no lucrativa, employment, cuenta propia or study [1], and Ley 14/2013 does not list any for the DNV [2].
  • What is checked instead of language: funds, health cover, no threat to public order, a contract or project, admission to an educational institution [1].
  • There is an exam only for citizenship by residence: DELE at A2 level or higher and the CCSE test [3]. The general residence period under the Código Civil is ten years, shorter for a number of countries [4].
  • For arraigo social without family ties and for socioformativo you need an informe de integración social from the autonomous community, and on renewals an “effort to integrate” may be taken into account, including learning the official languages of the place where you live [1].
  • Language can also be the purpose of the stay: language courses at official schools or Cervantes centres give grounds for an estancia, if the language is not your native language or an official language of your country [1].

Do you need Spanish to get a residence permit?

For the permit itself, as a rule, no. We went through the conditions in the Reglamento de extranjería (Real Decreto 1155/2024) for no lucrativa, employment, cuenta propia, study and larga duración: they require funds, insurance, a contract or project, admission to an educational institution, no threat to public order and a paid fee, but not a language certificate [1]. For the DNV, the law lists qualifications, an established relationship with a foreign company and funds [2].

GroundLanguage requirementWhat is checked
DNV (Ley 14/2013) [2]nonedegree or experience, income, link with a foreign company
No lucrativa (arts 61, 62) [1]nonefunds of 400% of IPREM per month and 100% per family member, seguro de enfermedad
Study (art. 53) [1]none in the regulationadmission and payment of tuition
Employment and cuenta propia (arts 74, 84) [1]nonecontract or project, qualifications
Arraigo social, socioformativo (art. 127) [1]informe de integraciónreport from the autonomous community
Larga duración (art. 176) [1]none5 years of residence, resources, seguro
Citizenship [3]DELE A2 and CCSEexams at the Instituto Cervantes

University requirements for the language of instruction are set by the university itself; they are not in the regulation. This is a matter of admission, not of the residence permit. The procedure for students is described in the route card for study.

Where does language knowledge still count?

In two places: in the integration report and on renewals. For arraigo social, if you have no foreign relatives with a permit, and for arraigo socioformativo, the regulation requires an informe de integración social, issued by the autonomous community or, if it so decides, by the local authority, within one month of the request [1]. On renewal of no lucrativa, employment and cuenta propia, the authority assesses the “effort to integrate”. This is an optional argument: it is put forward when one of the renewal conditions is not met. The report, if positive, confirms knowledge of constitutional values and, “where applicable”, the learning of the official languages of the place of residence [1].

Catalonia has two official languages, so such a report may also mention Catalan (do you need Catalan, integration report in Catalonia). What exactly the report records, and to what extent, is decided by the autonomous community: the regulation has no single language test.

What about citizenship: which language and which exams?

Citizenship by residence requires two exams run by the Instituto Cervantes: DELE at A2 level or higher and the CCSE, a test on the Constitution and the social and cultural realities of Spain [3] (how the exams work). Exempt from DELE are those who have already passed it at A2 or higher and nationals of Spanish-speaking countries [3]. Article 22 of the Código Civil requires, as a general rule, ten years of legal and continuous residence, while for refugees, nationals of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal and Sephardic Jews the period is shorter [4]. Nationals of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan are not on this list.

Can language be the basis for an estancia?

Yes, but as a purpose, not as a condition. The regulation includes in the estancia de larga duración in-person courses in Spanish or other official languages of Spain at official language schools or at centres accredited by the Instituto Cervantes or a similar body, if it is not your native language or an official language of your country of nationality [1]. To extend such an estancia, you need to pass the course at the school or obtain a DELE diploma, or register for the exam [1]. More: language courses and study estancia.

Where to learn Spanish and how to prove your level?

State courses are run by the escuelas oficiales de idiomas (EOI). Under the Education Act they give particular support to Spanish as a foreign language, as well as to EU languages and the other official languages of Spain, including Catalan [5]. Teaching is split into basic, intermediate and advanced levels, which match A, B and C of the European framework, from A1 to C2. You can enrol if you turn 16 in the year classes start [5]. Each level you pass gives an official certificate [5]. Every school publishes its own enrolment dates, fees and number of places; in Barcelona, for example, Spanish for foreigners is taught at EOI Barcelona-Drassanes.

Your level is proved by the DELE diploma. It is issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Ministry of Education, at six levels from A1 to C2 [6]. A2 is enough for citizenship [3]. You do not need it for the residence permit, but an EOI certificate or a DELE diploma clearly shows that you are learning the language if on renewal you rely on the effort to integrate [1]. How the exams work: CCSE and DELE A2. If you are moving on the digital nomad visa, you can start learning once you are in Spain: this visa does not require Spanish.

Frequently asked questions

Do you need Spanish for the DNV?
No. Ley 14/2013 lists for the DNV qualifications (a degree or experience), a relationship with a foreign company and funds. There is no language exam on the list. [2]
Do you need Spanish for a no lucrativa residence permit?
No. Regulation 1155/2024 lists funds, health cover, no threat to public order and a paid fee. A language certificate is not among the conditions. [1]
Do you need to know Spanish when renewing a residence permit?
Not as a condition. On renewal, the “effort to integrate” is taken into account, and it is supported by a report from the autonomous community. That report may record the learning of the official languages of the place of residence. [1]
What language do you need for Spanish citizenship?
Spanish at DELE A2 level or higher plus the CCSE test; both are run by the Instituto Cervantes. Exempt are those who already hold DELE A2 or higher and nationals of Spanish-speaking countries. [3]
Do you need to know Catalan in Barcelona?
The regulation does not require Catalan for a residence permit. The integration report issued by the autonomous community may record the learning of the official languages of the place of residence. What exactly is recorded is decided by Catalonia. [1]
What is an informe de integración?
A report from the autonomous community on social integration. It is required for arraigo social without family ties and for arraigo socioformativo, and on renewals it is put forward as evidence of the effort to integrate. [1]
Where can I learn Spanish officially in Spain?
At the escuelas oficiales de idiomas. These are state schools that teach Spanish as a foreign language from A1 to C2 and issue an official certificate for each level. You can enrol from 16. [5]
What is DELE?
The official diploma of Spanish as a foreign language. It is issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Ministry of Education, at levels from A1 to C2. Citizenship requires DELE A2 or higher. [6]
